I think you made a good point about performance on free hardware/software setups.\r\nWhen I joined the project as lead, I received several proposals for Speed Dreams: bump to OpenGL4, ditch the older graphics engine, start supporting Vulkan, redistribute non-free assets, add analytics to our website, move to GitHub, use Discord... you name it. All of these proposals were made with the excuse of making the game \"more popular\" and/or \"run faster\".\r\n\r\nBut all these proposals missed the point entirely. The absolutely first priority for a free software video game is *freedom*. Freedom is what ultimately sets the roadmap, and freedom must never be compromised in favour of other perceived factors such as popularity or supporting cutting-edge hardware.\r\n\r\nAnd then, with freedom in mind, as a video game developer you would care a lot for accessibility. Not only language accessibility, but also hardware accessibility. So that means caring a lot about less powerful hardware, caring about free software infrastructure, and once that works you can care about beautiful graphics, but always an optional bonus, and not a hard requirement.\r\n\r\nPeople in free software communities sometimes cannot afford expensive hardware, or they just do not want to buy it for several concerns (e.g.: proprietary drivers, poor Linux support).
