It is strange to review a music video, but
Buzzy Lee's masterpiece
Strange Town deserves some praise. I think Buzzy Lee, who co-directed the music video with
Jeff Leeds Cohn knew that they didn't know what they were doing. So the whole thing, spoiler alert, is poking fun at their own directing.
The video has subtitles for things Lee says in the visual material, which are not lyrics a lot of the times. And that makes everything hilarious. She constantly complains about how utterly idiotic the director of this is, while technically being a director herself.
The video was shot on film. Imagine that. And has an interesting ( even if not too expensive ) tense action scene in the end. It has a surprising amount of actually pretty good looking shots. While in between them there is a lot of stuff that was specifically meant to look like crap, because of the narrative of the piece.
Towards the middle, there is a shot where she wears, what looks like a hat with a "PornHub" logo. I think I know what it is referencing. There was a controversy with
Steven Spielberg because one of his adopted children,
Mikaela Spielberg became a porno-actress. Buzzy Lee's real name is
Sasha Rebecca Spielberg, she is a sister of Mikaela, and by extend a daughter of Steven. I think with this subtle shot, Lee addresses the controversy, while showing her support for her sister.
The music is not your typical pop thing. It is more in a style of early
Bjork. It is slightly experimental. Very interesting. And kind of almost avant-garde, but not really. It is still within the realm of normalcy. It is like a song from a "Strange Town", or something...
Happy Hacking!!!
