But this over-reliance on audio doesn't mean that the visuals are not good. To be honest, this movie gave the director plenty of room to show off. Almost every second shot of this film is showy. We start with a very elaborate choreography of an entire town-full of people in one area. Then there is an almost 10 minute long single unbroken shot of Fey ( the switch board operator played by Sierra McCormick ) where she is answering strange calls. And this scene is amazing! Then literally the next shot goes for another 4 minutes where the camera travels from the switch board where she was sitting, through the town, into a very crowded basketball game, then out of it, and to a radio station where the other main character Everett played by Jake Horowitz is. This directors shows off like crazy. And given that the movie is self funded, this is truly impressive stuff. Also the whole film is a period piece set in the 60s. With clothing and tech and cars from that era. How the hell did he manage all of it with his own money?
One interesting face that I was not expecting to see was Jake Horowitz who plays a guy that gets eaten. The thing is, today I reviewed a movie where he is one of the lead actors called The Vast Of Night which was supposed to be this small self funded movie. But somehow the actor got to be in a Luca Guadagnino picture starring Timothée Chalamet.
In the beginning of Avatar, Jake Sully is a marine joining a group of marines in a new area. Even though he is given a special role, to be in an Avatar. Instead of going to action with his actual human body. James Cameron written a flaw to the character that works as a catalyst to a change. Jake cannot walk. But in the body of the Avatar he can walk. He can run and jump all he wants. This, technically, sparks a controversial opinion in him. Which makes him choose the side of the Na'vi instead of the marines.
"You know they are listening to us this very moment?" - said Jake to Tom on a party one night. "What are you talking about?" - Tom was obviously confused. So Jake had to continue - "You know the Facebook app and the Google app on your phone is constantly recording what we have to say to each other, forming an opinions on us. They claim it's for advertising. But they can use it for anything they want. You know?". Tom looked at Jake with a slight smile. He knew he had a very good comeback. After a short pause Tom said - "I use a dumb phone." - and went into the party. But Jake didn't stop feeling bad. Jake didn't use no phone at all.
