I saw an interview where Quentin Tarantino praises the 1980 Hitchcockian Brian De Palma film Dressed to Kill. And now after actually watching it myself, I can totally understand why.

Being almost a parody of Hitchcock, Dressed to Kill is a directing masterpiece. The way the camera is used in this film is so fucking good I was literally yelling at the screen while watching "this is so fucking good".

Obviously since it is not a Hitchcock movie and since it wasn't done during the code, and instead was done when R-rating was a thing, the movie can dare to show way more sex and way more violence. We get a pussy closeup in the opening sequence. And yet de Palma doesn't go too raw on any of the sex or violence. He approaches all of it with an insane cinematic flourish. So many good shots. So many good edits. So much good film-making.

The film has actors, but it is not about the actors. It is all about the god-damned director. The whole film is one big directing muscle flex for de Palma. Like yeah, the story is kind of good. But it's not designed to be just told. It's designed to be cinematically presented. It would not make for much just talking about the story. Without the directing, the story is kind of pointless.

I really liked this movie and will definitely re-watch it later. Many times.

Happy Hacking!!!

Watching the opening scene of Brian De Palma's 1998 film Snake Eyes makes you realize that this motherfucker is trying very hard. We have 13 minutes of Nicolas Cage running around a very crowded set. The scene is clever with its camera, giving us multiple layers of exposition in the same time. Like there could be a TV on the foreground and Cage on the background. And they seem unrelated at first, but the scene establishes most of it's plot details right in this very shot. And then the shot ends ( 13 minutes later ) at the exact moment, the script drops the "inciting incident". De Palma is really trying hard to direct the shit out this movie.
