"Red Pill" became the go-to word for the right-wing thinkers of the 21st century. They equate taking the "blue pill" to being ignorant. To not questioning what they believe to be "harmful" leftist ideologies. While the "red pill" is the pill towards awakening. Towards enlightenment. Or some bullshit like this. The irony is that the blue pill and red pill was taken from the 1999 film by The Wachowskis called The Matrix. By The Wachowskis, who, if you know anything about the two, are really not the kind of people who would be calling themselves "conservatives".
In 1998 Steven Spielberg shocked the cinematic frontier with his film Saving Private Ryan which had one of the most brutal depictions of warfare, with its opening battle-scene. This caused a small shift in the ways Hollywood was trying to cinematically portray war. And who's better than Ridley Scott, to attempt at beating Spielberg at war footage. Which he tried to do with his 2001 film Black Hawk Down.
This had to be done finally! One of the biggest inspirations for Moria's Race, one of my favorite childhood movies, one of the best action films ever and perhaps one of the most colorful films: Speed Racer by the Wachowskis.
