Like the Glossary on Stallman.org this is a list of meanings of words that I use throughout my articles.

The page will be updated once every so often with new words.

Freedom

Person's control over the person's self and things belonging to the person. From freedom all human rights could be derived. Meaning freedom is the goal. It is not merely useful to have. It is the goal. Everything else could be useful to achieve freedom or to maintain it.

Power

Person's control over another person, or another person's belongings. Or person's ability to take another person's Freedom. Power is therefor an injustice. And because Freedom is the goal, the goal is to eliminate all Power from existence. The problem is, that would mean controlling other people, which means - having power. Which makes everything paradoxical. But non-the-less important.

Paternalism

Power over another person for that person's supposed good. Often used as argument for Power against children. But also used frequently to justify this of that Power against other demographics of people. Due to Paternalism being Power, it is an injustice and should be fought against.

Free Software

Software that respects the users Freedom. Also known as "Free / Libre Software" or simply "Libre Software". Sometimes referred to as "Open Source". Full definition of "Free Software" could be found on GNU.org, but in short:

Free software respects the user by providing the source code, which the user can look at and edit and providing a copyright license granting the following 4 freedoms:

0. Freedom to use the program as the user wishes.
1. Freedom to read and change the source code.
2. Freedom to share the program with others ( paid or unpaid ).
4. Freedom to share the changed version with other ( paid or unpaid ).

Proprietary Software

Also known as "Non-Free Software" is software that restricts user's freedom in one way or another. Or in other words software which is not Free Software. Since Power is an injustice, Proprietary Software is also an injustice.

JavaScript

Web browsers are thought by people as being the software. And websites as what this software is rendering. But in many cases now a days, those websites come with their own software often written in a programming language called "JavaScript".

When you load a page with JavaScript in it in your browser, your browser, without asking you, is installing and running this software that comes with the page. And that could be very bad, both for your security and for your freedom.

Copyleft

A trick where copyright is used as a viral tool to destroy itself. Usually it works like this: A work is being made and automatically copyright is being assigned to the author. That author publishes the work, but adds to it a copyright license, granting everybody the right to copy and redistribute the work, but under a condition: The new work, which is derived from this work, should be published in the same way, with the same, or very similar license. Making it a recursive license. Famous copyleft licenses include the license of this post CC-BY-SA and the GNU GPL.

Norepineuphoria

The angry feeling one gets when presented with opposing world-views. A by-product of elevated levels of Norepinephrine a chemical regulating Adrenalin. Often it is released when in danger, or when arguing. Presumably because beliefs manifest themselves as physical connection of neurons, any attempt at disruption of those connections might cause a similar reaction as with other physical damage. Therefor Norepinephrine, Adrenalin and thus - Norepineuphoria.

The term was coined by my girlfriend when we were talking about political issues.

Enshitification

The cycle of technological ideas which ends up with decay. Coined by Cory Doctorow in his observation about Facebook. Enshitifaction of Facebook happened in those stages:

- Promising new platform advertises itself as a better alternative. Usually by being less evil. ( Facebook in 2005 advertised as respecting privacy, while My Space was obviously spying on the users ).

- The platform takes leverage by introducing interoperability. ( Facebook designed an option of automatic reposting of My Space posts to Facebook. )

- The platform gains popularity.

- The platform starts squeezing every ounce of money from the gained popularity.

- Every promise of not being evil, slowly erodes until nothing is left. ( Facebook is using private data of users to make money, squeezing the advertisement and data customers in the process. And fighting interoperability so as to slow down its decay. ).

- As a result the platform decays in both quality and popularity. ( Facebook shares drop, users leave, "Facebook" as a brand is damaged ).

- The platform tries to reinvent itself. ( Facebook renames itself as "Meta" and starts investing in VR ).

AI

AI, or "Artificial Intelligence" are algorithms that do statistical analyses of certain sets of examples, to produce something that statistically meets the criteria of being in the set of examples. For example, a set could be a bunch of images of cats. A computer can analyze them to produce a statistical model of what is a "cat". And then produce an image that will satisfy the parameters of this model. Therefor being able to generate images of cats.

Other types of machine learning are also included, when I say "AI". But generally speaking when I say "AI" I mean a program that "learned" to modify data in some way, to speed up, or completely eliminate the process of making something. Usually being a product of laziness.

Clearnet

Regular internet. Not on an alternative internet protocol such as Tor, i2p or anything else. Accessible from a normal browser.

I decided to give myself somewhat of a Ryan Gosling marathon, after re-watching Drive the other day. I gave myself a challenge though. I didn't want to watch the stuff I already like. I didn't want "Only God Forgives" ( which I will review soon ). I didn't want "Blade Runner 2049". I wanted something else. Something that I personally would not select normally. And therefor I put Crazy, Stupid, Love.

Sometimes the developers just include into their software something that is there not the user's sake. Which ends up Interfering with user's needs. And it's just plain annoying.
