Everybody inside of Israel was shocked on October 7 2023, because nobody... NOBODY expected something on this scale to happen. Mossad and Shin Bet ( Israeli Intelligence Agencies ) are some of the best in the world. And the military is some of the most advanced. And yet it still happened regardless of all these things. What the hell went wrong? Well the official reason sounds something like "There was an intelligence error". But if you dig a little deeper, you start to realize that it is not as simple as you think. And it might be the first true example of a lot of people losing their lives to skynet.
The various conflicts of interest when it came to the attack, beside the AI stuff is already painting the whole thing in shady colors. If you have been inside of Israel in the end of 2023, you probably saw the posters claiming something like "There is no more left and right".
Just before the attacks in the September and earlier August, Israel was going through a huge wave of protests.
These protests were addressing the newly elected Benjamin Netaniyahu and his plans regarding the changes to the judicial system, which were, to a lot of people, reminding a sort of strange power-grabbing political move, that Putin did in Russia back in the beginning of the 21st century, which slowly eroded the democracy of Russia into what we see today, a dictatorship.
Netaniyahu already seemed to a lot of people in Israel ( mainly the left ) as a sort of proto-Putin type character. Putin was in power for way too long. Netanuyahu was in power for way too long too. Putin took small breaks of being in power ( like the short presidency of Dmitry Medvedev ) and Netaniyahu did something similar too. And yet both constantly were re-elected back into office.
So 2023 comes. Netaniyahu is re-elected again and immediately starts proposing things that will destroy democracy. It causes an enormous public outcry and half of the country goes into protests. Netaniyahu is under immense pressure. He needs this to stop. He needs the left leaning people to join his side. Or at the very least to stop yelling at him.
Suddenly October 7th happens. And immediately after that the political campaign of "there is no left and right" comes everywhere. As if the attacks were orchestrated specifically to stop the protest. To make people forget about the protests. As if there should have been something a bit more important than freedom on people's minds. As if with a gun to the head, a person would not think about democracy or something silly like this, but only would think about surviving the next day...
But that is not all...
"We're in Hell" ( a YouTube channel ) made
a highly detailed video ( where he went over a lot of data and publicly available documents ) about various military uses of AI, which ultimately made him to speculate about an idea that I couldn't take out of my head ever since seeing it: October 7th, might be a result of an AI "error".
Don't get me wrong. There is still a lot of evidence to suggest that the whole thing was orchestrated by Netaniyahu. And it was probably to some extent, at least, allegedly, funded by him, as a lot of people on the left claim to this day. But Shin Bet failing to stop it? It being SUCH a big issue? That seems to be that there was some sort of something out of proportions here.
As far as I can tell the plan was to cause a small disturbance on the Gaza border to divert the attention from the issue of Democracy to the issue of "Survival" or something. As far as I can tell Netaniyahu, ( if he really orchestrated this whole ordeal. At the moment those are just allegations. ) knew that IDF and Intelligence agencies can hold everything under control. But something blew up.
Based on the version we got in the media, back in 2023, there were reports sent by agents situated in Gaza, about the gathering and training of Hamas, which lead to the attack. But the Israeli side of operation ignored the warnings. It could lead you to suspect Netaniyahu even more. As he is by definition the top ranking officer in this whole ordeal, so to speak. But...
As pointed out by "We're in Hell" investigation, Israeli Intelligence invested a lot into developing automated systems to aid with Intelligence and military operations. Basically there was an AI hype problem. And a system of some kind was already in place by October 7th, which falsely marked the warnings of the Intelligence inside of Gaza as something not so serious.
Digging even deeper we might even speculate a sort
2001: A Space Odyssey plot going on.
Right after the attacks, as IDF entered Gaza in order to kill people related to Hamas, I was shocked to learn that they deciding what buildings to blow up using AI. I mean, what the actual fuck!
But if you think about the whole situation from a different perspective, you can start piecing something together. So Israel and probably other countries, were developing AI for military / intelligence aid, which, obviously requires data, to be trained. That data could be gathered only in a big military operation. Such as the one inside of Gaza. So a sort of catalyst to start that operation should have occurred in the first place.
The craziest theory that you could come up with might sound something like this: The AI "understood" that it needs data. And therefor manufactured a lie, to cause a huge issue, which would prompt it to collect a lot of data about warfare. Unreasonable?
If you think that AI researchers warned about
the paper-clip problem. To quote Nick Bostrom, an AI researcher from Sweden:
Suppose we have an AI whose only goal is to make as many paper clips as possible. The AI will realize quickly that it would be much better if there were no humans because humans might decide to switch it off. Because if humans do so, there would be fewer paper clips. Also, human bodies contain a lot of atoms that could be made into paper clips. The future that the AI would be trying to gear towards would be one in which there were a lot of paper clips but no humans.
Then to suggest that something like this happened with the military AI system on October 7th is not too much of a stretch. It needed data, it "decided to ignore" a warning to get this data. It is still highly speculative. We don't know what went wrong there. And there is the whole Netaniyahu thing. And the whole history of political tensions thing. So the situation is complicated. But damn... If this is even remotely plausible, I don't fucking know how can anybody ever trust the damn AIs.
Happy Hacking!!!
