Luc Besson is known to be a little bit of a pervert. But I'm about to argue that, in addition to liking young women, he also has a sort of a fetish. And while with directors like
Quentin Tarantino the fetish is something rather understandable ( Quentin likes feet ). Luc Besson seems to be turned on by... well... fish. And specifically by Dolphins. His 1988 film
Le Grand Bleu is a love triangle between a young woman, an amphibian man, and a Dolphin ( which the film presents to be a mermaid ).
Stylistically the film is the calm sea section of
Avatar: The Way of Water extended into 3 hours. It even seems like
James Cameron was directly inspired by Besson's work, for his second Avatar picture. Speaking of Besson's kinky nature. There is a movie he did in 2017 called
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets which has a race of beach occupying aliens, very similar to the
Met Kaina clan in
Avatar 2. And the main character from this group is played by
Sasha Luss a young Russian woman, who Besson's makeup and VFX departments turned into an amphibian lady. And yes, he was turned on by her enough to work with her again on 2019th
Anna.
The amphibian man in
Le Grand Bleu is played by the legendary
Jean-Marc Barr who in 2013 played in
Lars Von Trier's
Nymphomaniac Volume 2 the controversial pedophile character. He is a frequent collaborator of Von Trier. And one of the founding fathers of the
Dogme 95 movement, being one of the few film-directors ( Marc Barr is also a director ) who attempted to make a
Dogme 95 film.
His friend in the film Enzo Molinari, is played by the legendary
Jean Reno, who in 1994 played an almost controversial pedophile character in
Luc Besson alongside
Natalie Portman. As of the statement by Besson's then wife
Maïwenn Le Besco ( who married Besson at 16 ) the film was about their relationship.
The young woman in love with the amphibian man in the film was played by
Rosanna Arquette who you may know from
Quentin Tarantino's 1994 picture
Pulp Fiction, playing the drug dealer's wife that has a lot of piercing and starts her scene talking about a blowjob.
I have absolutely no idea why people think the film industry is full of perverts. The movie is a very nice and beautiful tale. There is almost no tits in it. If anything it just begs only one question to be honest. And the question is: Why
Guillermo del Toro and not
Luc Besson was in fact the one to make the 2017th best picture Oscar winner film
The Shape of Water?
