I love Isabela Merced. Ever since I saw her being this absolutely amazing girl in Michael Bay's Transformers 5 where there isn't enough of her either, I was a fan. I even genuinely tried to like Madame Web because of her part in it. And so it was rather disappointing to see how little screen-time she has in the new 2025 James Gunn film Superman. In case you didn't understand the title, she plays Hawkgirl.

James Gunn direction is a little silly. Especially in this movie, his direction feels kind of like whatever Robert Rodriguez does with his family-friendly pictures, just with a proper budget and therefor not half-assed visual effects. Is it bad? Depends on what you want to see. Something like the Man of Steel movies by Zack Snyder tried to immerse the audience in the what-ifs of Superman's reality. They were trying to show what it would be like to have somebody as strong and as all powerful as Superman. Both from psychics perspective and politically. The 2025 Superman is more allegorical. It has not a lot of interest in realism. As I said, it feels like a Robert Rodriguez movie. And while Rodriguez movies are fucking silly as fuck, they are still good entertainment. And sometimes even good political thought pieces, like his Machete.

In my opinion it is a stroke of genius to cast specifically David Corenswet in the role of Superman. Being from a Jewish family, that brings quite an interesting layer to the political allegory this film is going for. Some people say the movie is about immigration. Some say it is about the Israel-Palestine conflict. Maybe it is both. But Superman being Jewish... Hm... That is some interesting complication.

I really like the scene where Superman agrees to be interviewed by his girlfriend Lois Lane ( Rachel Brosnahan ) thinking that he knows all of the answers. And it turns into a complete disaster. Because while he is a well intentioned person, he is rather politically awkward. Like he doesn't really think things through too much. And that can cause political tensions. And she is trying to point it out, while he is trying to pretend that just being good is enough. Is it? Is the movie trying to preach that being good while not thinking about the entire world of geopolitics is a good thing? I mean, the movie concludes at Superman realizing that it is okay to have human flaws.

Also what is this movie trying to do exactly? James Gunn directed Marvel films before this. Technically speaking Madame Web ( with Isabela Merced ) is a Marvel film. ( Well more like a Sony film with Marvel characters, but you got the point ). Nicholas Hoult who plays Lex Luthor was in the X-Men films before that. X-Men is Marvel. Nathan Fillion ( Green Lantern ) was in Deadpool movies, again Marvel. Edi Gathegi ( Mister Terrific ) also was in X-Men. What is this thing? Are Warner Bros. and specifically DC desperate? As in they are trying to get as many Marvel people on board as possible. Or are they messing with Marvel on purpose. As if to say "hey losers, look who's on my side now".

You will probably laugh at me right now, but so far I've seen 1973 George Lucas film American Graffiti just twice. First time I stopped at about 25 minute mark, not getting the hype around the movie. This time I decided to get through to the end, no matter what it takes. And believe me, if you are not laughing at me right now, you don't understand. This is fucked up! Holy fucking shit!!! I see it now!!! I see it!
