I love Mission Impossible II. In my opinion John Woo directed an action masterpiece with that film. But unfortunately we live in the world where critics have no appreciation for good action. Come on, Oscars for stunts are just now started to be considered. So... in an unfortunate set of events MI2 was a critical failure. Too dissimilar to what Bryan De Palma did on the first picture, they said. J.J. The true brilliance of the film is the focus on the minute details. All puzzle pieces fit together and once you put the puzzle together, it feels so good. Given it is detective thriller, that's to be expected. The issue comes when you're watching it from the modern day perspective with all the Martin Scorseses and Destry Spielbergs out the, making actually messed up pictures. The thrill presented is light, tame in comparison with what is present now.

Contained thrillers are a very interesting sub-genre of film. They are usually cheaper to produce ( because they happen in one location ), but if done right, are masterful test-grounds for a film-maker. Look no further than M. Night Shyamalan and his excellent entries into this genre: Signs, The Village, Knock at the Cabin, Trap ( though this last one cannot be called cheap, I suppose ). Yet, when it comes to this kind of restricted film-making, one director takes the crown - Alfred Hitchcock and his 1954 film Rear Window. Let me explain...

Vibe-Coders, people that use LLMs for programming, are found at a such high levels of stress these days, that they end up in a hospital over it. They believe that they need to keep up-to-date on everything regarding the endless AI updates, to the point that it literally deteriorates their health. We all know a person in some field that feels like they would not necessarily want to use AI, but in the same time, they don't want to "fall behind" the rest. Quentin Tarantino stated that a quality of a film is measured in how well it corrupts the audience, showing as an example the 1971 Don Siegel film Dirty Harry where the main character ( a cop ) is trying to catch a psychopathic serial killer, which leads him into breaking the rules, because of the nature of the threat. He basically throws the civil liberties out of the window to catch the motherfucker, because otherwise the motherfucker is uncatchable. Which makes the audience for a moment, share that idea, and have a reason all of a sudden to not give basic human rights to bad people. Some people called this movie a "Nazi Propaganda Piece" but it is undeniable, the movie succeeded at corrupting its audience and therefore it is a picture of a great quality.

Ron Howard is a hell of a director. He knows how to get the image that he wants. And he knows how to do it so that it will hold up practically forever. His 1991 fire-fighters movie Backdraft is not an exception. The fire sequences are so real and so visceral in this film, despite being done 3 decades ago, that perhaps this film is even better when it comes to planning shots that hold up than his Apollo 13 movie ( where he used real weightlessness to shoot the space scenes ).

When I reviewed Havoc I wrote about this strange feeling that I dubbed "short orgasmic blackout" when I see a stupidly serious, angry face of a female character that is really cute. And one of the most cutest actors living these days is fucking Ana de Armas. Let me illustrate. We see young Victoria Comte playing Eve ( the main character ) while being 11 ( Comte was born in 2013, do the math ), and then the film says "12 years later" so now she is 23. Yet de Armas playing her is 36 ( at the time of filming ). She plays somebody almost half her age and it works. Why? She is fucking cute! That's why. And because of that I knew I was probably getting the "short orgasmic blackout" the movie.
