[icon reviews]Caught Stealing 2025 is a bit dark for a comedy, but way too bright for Aronofsky

Vincent D'Onofrio pops up on my radar lately. I somehow get attracted to the same movies as the actor, which probably means that I need to review Full Metal Jacket by Stanley Kubrick, where D'Onofrio had his, probably, most iconic role. In any case D'Onofrio played an Ashkenazi Jewish gangster motherfucker in a Darren Aronofsky 2025 film Caught Stealing. Something that I had to see, just based on the absurdity of it.

[icon reviews]Gladiator 2000 is Ridley Scott's turn at mimicking Michael Bay

There are quite some differences between the Scott brothers ( Ridley and Tony ) and the Maximus himself Michael Bay. You can read Troler's observations and then my rant in the comments to see why they aren't quite the same. But specifically Tony Scott films sometimes feels almost like Michael Bay movies. Especially early Tony Scott and early Michael Bay, before both of them knew how similar they are and before they started trying to develop each other into opposite directions. Which happened roughly in time with the 21st century. And yet with all this the Ridley Scott epic Gladiator which was shot at 20st century and released at 21st, bluntly steals one of the shots Michael Bay is known for.

[icon reviews]Man on Fire 2004 is Tony Scott's Leon: The Professional

Critics gave negative reviews to 2004 Tony Scott's film Man on Fire because of "grim story that gets harder to take the longer it goes on". Are you fucking serious? How then Lars Von Trier movies get good reviews? Something isn't quite right here. To be frank, the film is very ultra-cinematic. Which could rub some critics the wrong way. Scott doesn't just direct the shit out of it. He also edits the shit out of it. Making one of the coolest directed films in existence. Which if you think about it, isn't particularly what critics find as a serious picture. And yes, the film is grim. At times it feel like a horror film. Not just a thriller. But the film is a rather satisfactory experience.

[icon reviews]Once Upon a Time... In Hollywood 2019 is Tarantino respecting the audience

People often complain about dumb movies with too much unnecessary spoon-feeding. We get so much explaining and over-explaining that the brain hurts sometimes. You already know what is going on. You are following the story. You don't need no god damned reminder of what you are watching. And yet the studio heads still think that you are too dumb to understand what's going on in front of you on the screen. Respecting the audience on the other hand is a leap of faith on a part of a film-maker and only the greatest do that well. Quentin Tarantino with his 2019 film Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood takes the hardest such leap of his career.

[icon reviews]Machete 2010 is about US politics of 2025 somehow

An exploitation film is a film that exploits some talked about fear or trend in culture in order to sell tickets to a movie that is probably not very good. Exploitation films are usually low budget, badly made B-movies, with a certain charm to them, if you like Tommy Wiseau's work. 2010's Robert Rodriguez film Machete is, somewhat of an intentional attempt at recreating the exploitation film phenomenon. Which exploits US politics of 2025, somehow. ( Rodriguez must have a time machine somewhere in his studio ).

This is not your average racing film, it is simple, but not average, because it is pleasant to watch. And that is because it manages to control the tension very well.

South African filmmakers, writer Brian Cox ( who directed some bad films himself ) and a director Ralph Ziman decided to try to adopt what appears to be a hentai ( animated pornography ) film from Japan ( with the same name ) into a cool-ass female-empowerment action flick. They even got Samuel L. Jackson ( an objectively good actor ) involved in the project somehow. Yet almost every decision made in the production of this film was a wrong decision.

Coming into a film called Queer I didn't except the movie to go where it went. It was not a romance drama film, which it was marketed as. It only started like one. If you like Guadagnino's Call Me By Your Name and except the same movie here. Don't. This is a completely different movie.

I came into the film without any knowledge that this film is a musical. I failed to see the obvious foreshadowing to it. The casting of the singer BjΓΆrk for the lead character, the word "Dancer" included in the damn title, the beginning of the film, where BjΓΆrk's character prepares to dance in a stage-play. All of that went over my head. And when the first musical number started I was pleasantly surprised.

I am still unsure whether Coralie Fargeat meant for The Substance to be taken seriously or not. There was a similar misunderstanding when it comes to Lars Von Trier's The House That Jack Built, where the audience were laughing, unable to comprehend in the intensity of the film, while the director was dead serious. The experience I had watching The Substance reminded me of this confusion. The film is so over the top, it beats the absurdity of Sam Raimi's horror-comedies.

Paul Verhoeven is to some extend a legendary film-maker. RoboCop, Total Recall, Starship Troopers, Hoolow Man. Movies you have probably seen and seen again. Yet it seems like his movie Showgirls perhaps was made with a miscalculation on his part.

In Florida Moms For Liberty together with the governor Ron DeSantis are fighting against the woke. Or as a different group of Moms pointed out, they are practicing fascism in a supposedly Free Country. The situation is hilarious!
