[icon reviews]Midsommar is not a horror film

On the very basic surface level it could be read as a horror film. It is slashery in nature. It has very gruesome body mutilation scenes. But the film feels less of a horror and more of something like Nicolas Winding Refn's film Only God Forgives. Only this one has Ari Aster written all over it.

Ari Aster quickly becomes one of the more interesting film-makers out there. And this is sad, because his 2 latest movies were commercial disappointments, while being excellent pieces of film-making. I already reviewed his anxiety epic Beau Is Afraid, which was a flop, while being a stellar piece of mastery over tension. And with Eddington ( which also flopped ) I'm starting to think that Aster has a marketing problem.

Kristoffer Borgli's 2023 film Dream Scenario starring Nicolas Cage is a movie about a man, who is being dreamed about by a lot of people. At first his family have weird dreams about him. Then people related to them. Then the whole world. At first the dreams make him famous. But then they take a turn for the worst. At first he is just doing nothing in those dreams. Then he is being a creep. And then he literally murders people in those dreams. Which makes the public, in the real life, react to him with greater and greater rivalry. Apart from, for some reason, people in France.

In my article about Corruption of the audience I observed the talent of Luca Guadagnino in this regard. I was mostly talking about his film Bones and All where he managed to humanize cannibalism. But I think with his 2025 picture After the Hunt he is finally attempting the hardest challenge yet.

[icon reviews]Caught Stealing 2025 is a bit dark for a comedy, but way too bright for Aronofsky

Vincent D'Onofrio pops up on my radar lately. I somehow get attracted to the same movies as the actor, which probably means that I need to review Full Metal Jacket by Stanley Kubrick, where D'Onofrio had his, probably, most iconic role. In any case D'Onofrio played an Ashkenazi Jewish gangster motherfucker in a Darren Aronofsky 2025 film Caught Stealing. Something that I had to see, just based on the absurdity of it.

There is a sub-genre of Horror films categorized by surrealism. It could range between totally insane films like anything directed by David Lynch all the way to something like Mandy by Panos Cosmatos, where it is kind of surreal, but also doesn't actually ask from the audience too much in terms of figuring out what is going on. "Beau Is Afraid" is more toward the David Lynch category of surreal horror.
