The 1933 film itself is not too special. For its time, there's a lot to laud. Comparing what Peter Jackson would do later, there's night and day. I do not mean the special effects, which are exceptional.

[icon reviews]Trap 2024: oh... M. Night Shyamalan is Back, Baby!

We are living in the most exciting era when it comes to M. Night Shyamalan. The era I would call "A lottery". M. Night started strong. Critical acclaim and commercial success hit him hard, when he was a young film-maker. They were calling him "the next Spielberg". Then doubt possessed his sole. Some critics said something about something he did. And there he went. On a downward spiral towards the bottom. The Happening, The Last Airbender, After Earth... M. Night never truly recovered from this turmoil. He did great films since: The Visit, Split, Knock at the Cabin. But he then made strangely not so great films in between: Glass, Old, the strangely The Happening esque ending of Knock at the Cabin. Going today to an M. Night Shyamalan movie is truly a lottery. You never know what you are gonna get. With Trap we all got a fucking jack-pot!

[icon reviews]Project Hail Mary is weirdly Von Tririan?

Project Hail Mary is one of those few movies, which I read in the book form before watching. The book by Andy Weir in an absolute banger of a read. The plotting is awesome. The detail the book goes into is insane. Basically Andy Weir is one of the best contemporary writers living today. And Hollywood wanting to adopt Weir is and always will be bound to happen.

[icon reviews]Alita: Battle Angel is Robert Rodriguez's Pearl Harbor

In my review of Michael Bay's Bad Boys II I brought up an interesting theory people have about the film. The amount of Bayhem! it holds in could be a direct response to the out-of-the-comfort-zone feel Bay must have had experienced making Pearl Harbor. Basically, the film was so different from what Bay usually does, he had to crank the next movie's Bayhem! up to 11, to make it feel right again. After Robert Rodriguez directed Alita: Battle Angel with an estimated budget of about $200 million, he had to come back to his comfort-zone too. And 3 months later ( that same year in 2019 ) he released Red 11. A micro-budgeted horror film made on almost exactly $7,000.

[icon reviews]Parallax at Max: Billie Eilish – Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D)

Am I bad guy for being so positive about a movie of a person I do not care much about? Well, there is nothing to fret, as the 3D film directed by Billie Eilish is palatable for everyone looking for entertainment. Certainly no masterpiece, the film still hold water in its flow. 3D doesn't work if there is no parallax. And parallax just out there doesn't work if there is no reason for it to exist. The documentary provides ten times that.

[icon reviews]Mandy 2018 tries to out-do the weirdness of Only God Forgives

In 2019 on the Cannes film festival director Nicolas Winding Refn ( the director of the 2013 film Only God Forgives ) released episodes 4 and 5 of his ( then ) new multi-episode picture Too Old To Die Young. Episode 5 titled "The Fool" contains a car chase scene. Some argue it is one of the most romantic car chases in cinematic history. The joke is, that the car chase is set to a romantic Barry Manilow's 1974 hit "Mandy", making the juxtaposition rather hilarious in nature. But given the ass-born theory specialist that I am, I must suggest an interesting twist to this whole ordeal. During the principal photography of the first episode of Too Old To Die Young another film-maker Panos Cosmatos released a film, strangely similar in style to whatever Refn is doing. And his film was called Mandy. We can theorize that maybe Refn responded, in his strange way, recognizing the stylistic similarities, so to speak.

Pairing a mystery, where each clue matters with a director behind Revolver, where the symbolic meaning of the film is hidden unless the viewer has pen and paper, and knowledge of gematria, and Hebrew. As such, a detective movie, of Sherlock Holmes nonetheless, is quite an invigorating blend.

Zack Snyder is the main force behind little 2011'th feminist, action, adventure, war / mental-institute, melodrama, about dancing prostitutes, Sucker Punch. He is the one credited with the story. He is the producer, the director and the co-writer. So it is through and through a Zack Snyder film.

My Neighbor Adolf is an Israeli, English language film about an old Jew living in Argentina, who got a new neighbor, who has a striking resemblance to Adolf Hitler. And it is about the paranoid obsession of this man with his neighbor.

Taika Waititi comes into an already saturated world of World War 2 exploitation pieces. It is of Nazis in the conventional historical sense. With that not being enough, it has child Nazis. And the protagonist Johannes "Jojo" Betzler (Roman Griffin Davis) who loves Hitler so much, the Fiurher is his imaginary friend, played by the director himself.

[icon reviews]Jojo Rabbit would not be possible without Inglourious Basterds

πŸ‘ 10 ❀ 3 πŸ”„ 1 πŸ’¬ 2

Quentin Tarantino told numerous times that the two places which gave the strongest reactions to his 2009 film Inglourious Basterds were Berlin and Tel Aviv. Why? Why reactions? Well... prior to Inglourious Basterds films about the subject of conflict between Jews and Nazis in World War II were largely serious pieces of cinema. Think Schindler's List. But as I pointed out in my review of Schindler's List, there was a considerable amount of effort on the part of Steven Spielberg to make the movie actually watchable. Tarantino with Inglourious Basterds made a movie that is not merely watchable, but outright enjoyable. He made a movie about this conflict where the audience are allowed to laugh. Taika Waititi's 2019 film Jojo Rabbit takes this premise and dials it to 11.
