As far as my speculation goes, I think, it is safe to assume, the following happened: In 1994 ( before doing
Bad Boys )
Michael Bay signed a 10 year contract with
Jerry Bruckheimer which expired in 2004 ( after
Bad Boys 2 ). Knowing that the contract is about to expire, 2 years prior ( in 2002 )
Steven Spielberg, in an attempt to get on good terms with Michael Bay, added a small reference to Bad Boys into his film
Minority Report. And then took Bay under his supervision for the next 10 years. Starting with the 2005 film
The Island. And through the
Transformers franchise. Bay returned the favor by showing a concept car designed for
Minority Report ( Lexus 2054 aka Lexus Minority ) multiple times in the background of
The Island. Still that's just a theory. I don't actually know what happened. But it seems plausible.

There are two modes for
Michael Bay: The playful mode of him having fun. This is the Bay of
Bad Boys and
Transformers. And a serious mode. That is the Michael Bay of films like
Ambulance,
Pearl Harbor and
13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. The latter of which is his most serious film ever.

In my review of
Bad Boys II I talked about how Michael Bay needed to discharge from
Pearl Harbor and do a properly Bayhem! movie. This speculation of mine is largely based on some stories from the set of this movie, where it looked like Bay tried to actually make a properly directed film in the very beginning and then suddenly snapped and started setting up Bayhem! shots out of nowhere in the middle of production. And when people pointed that out to him he told them to "Shut the fuck up" and that he "knows what he is doing".

The Rock by
Michael Bay is about an FBI chemist agent (
Nicolas Cage ) who calls for help from an old retired British Intelligence Agent played by
Sean Connery himself. No wander there are theories that this agent character could be James Bond, making this film a kind of unofficial Bayhem!ed sequel to Connery Bond films. It's not like he didn't play James Bond outside of the main franchise. He did play James Bond in
Never Say Never Again which is a real James Bond film, which is not a part of the main franchise. So maybe, possibly, he did that again here too. We will never know.

The first thing you notice when watching
Michael Bay's directorial debut
Bad Boys is that the movie is not trying to be a Michael Bay film. There was no Michael Bay films prior to it. Bay was doing music videos and commercials before this film. And while those do have some of the style Bay will eventually bring over to his cinema pictures, here it seems he is actually trying something else entirely. The best analogy for the movie would be
Tony Scott's 1993 film
True Romance written by
Quentin Tarantino.

It is infamous at this point that the production of the
Michael Bay quickly assembled into something from which a good script could be written. This movie started production without a script, only a rough idea of the story, which is not a bad rough idea. But all of the little details were not there at all by the time of production, leaving Bay pretty much at the helm of coming up with stuff on the spot.

Megan Fox. Megan Fox is the only flaw of
Michael Bay's
Transformers: Dark of the Moon. The script by
Ehren Kruger ( who wrote
Top Gun: Maverick and
F1 ) was written with Mikaela Banes ( Megan Fox ) as the girlfriend of
Shia LaBeouf's character Sam. But because of some drama behind the scenes ( which involved
Steven Spielberg for some reason ), she ultimately dropped out of the project, in very late stages of pre-production. Forcing the team to quickly patch her character out in a very forced and obvious way, replacing her with
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley who worked with Bay on Victoria Secret commercials. That ultimately made the film very confusing, emotionally.

It is rumored that
Michael Bay's
Armageddon is shown periodically at NASA to the people working there as a test of how much inaccuracies they can spot. The movie is fucking stupid if you want to think about anything remotely realistic. The science... what science? The film has never heard of it. The characters are fucking degenerates. The lack of tone is only rivaled by
Nicolas Winding Refn interviews. And yet somehow I cannot find myself hating on this movie.

So here is a movie from
Paramount Pictures that was executive produced by
Steven Spielberg with
Stanley Tucci playing a villain and
Mark Wahlberg playing a dad of a teenage girl. The movie touches on very hard emotional topics of sexual abuse and age discrimination. And
Peter Jackson does a very good job... Oh... wait... it's not
The Lovely Bones... ah... yeah... so...
Transformers: Age of Extinction!!!

Critics often think Michael Bay doesn't give a damn about characters, but how can you believe that when everything in the film is shut deliberately to be from a perspective of a character? Michael Bay is
Lars Von Trier of action. Lars uses strange chaotic camera work and weird editing choices to elevate the emotion on screen and Michael Bay uses chaotic camera work and weird editing choices to elevate the emotions too. If you take him seriously everything clicks into place. It's just Michael Bay likes it louder.

I decided to re-watch the first
Transformers film today, but differently. Instead of indulging in it as mindless entertainment, I decided I want to actually view it seriously, as I would with somebody like
Steven Spielberg, who, by the way, was an executive producer on the film.

Similarly to
Michael Mann's
Miami Vice Bad Boys II is about love, man... It is about how both
Will Smith and
Martin Lawrence love
Gabrielle Union. And how they are willing to do international terrorism and kill many many people, to save her. True love bro!

There is this satisfaction when it comes to animation, that
I know from personal experience where the longer you work on a shot, or a sequence, the more details there is in the animation, the more satisfying it is to later just watch this insane level of effort simply wash over you one frame after another.

1941 ( a 1979
Steven Spielberg action comedy film ) seems like a parody of
Michael Bay. The film's credits literally have explosions happen all throughout, under the scrolling text. There is so much colorful destruction, so much over the top action scenes, so much loud over-bombardment, that I believe this is the Ultimate Steven Spielberg film.
