It is not often that a horror films appears to tickle the right nerves from the high-brow crowd of cinema critics. With 93% Rotten Tomatoes score though, it is safe to assume that Zach Cregger's Weapons from 2025 is one of those rare movies.

[icon reviews]Please Don't Feed the Children 2025 shows that Destry Spielberg has more balls than her father

Steven Spielberg directed some rather intense movies throughout his career. He made Duel in 1971 about a maniac truck driver. He made a blog-buster sensation Jaws in 1974. And he made films like Schindler's List and War of the Worlds that could be considered horror films. But he never did a true, scary horror film. My mother used to say that "Steven Spielberg is too sentimental to make truly scary movies". But that statement isn't true about his daughter Destry. 2025 film by Destry Allyn Spielberg Please Don't Feed the Children shows that she is capable to rival fucking Eli Roth if she wants to.

[icon reviews]Vicious 2025 is a cool little therapy movie

A lot of horror films are therapeutic in nature. They let you see and examine some dark things about yourself or the world. And that is a good thing. For example, some people were "cured" from suicidal thoughts by watching the Saw franchise. A running theme in those films, is that Saw would choose some rather depressed, suicidal individuals for the "games". Where they need to do some utterly bad shit crazy things to themselves, to survive. That puts the whole suicide thing into perspective. Making you really understand how pointless it is, as a solution. The 2025 film Vicious written and directed by Bryan Bertino and starring Dakota Fanning is also a therapy horror film.

[icon reviews]Piranha II 1982 taught James Cameron how not to make sequels

We all know that James Cameron is a master when it comes to making sequels. His films like Terminator 2, Avatar 2 and Aliens are extremely good examples of how to make a sequel right. Unlike Steven Spielberg that avoids sequels. Steven avoided doing the second Jaws movie. James Cameron goes for it and wins. Speaking of Steven Spielberg's Jaws, not only sequels from that film were produced. Rip-offs, like the 1978 Piranha by Joe Dante also were produced. Those were parody material B-movie exploitation films. And so writer / director James Cameron decided to take the project of making a sequel to that Jaws rip-off, with his 1982 Piranha II: The Spawning.

If today we have a lot of films to choose from when we want to shock ourselves beyond believe: from barely serious, yet distrusting films by Eli Roth through intense hyper-violence by Coralie Fargeat or depressing looks at the world by Lars Von Trier all the way to deranged films like The Serbian Film, in 1970s you had probably only one true contender for such a level of derangeness. And it was the Tobe Hooper's 1974 film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

[icon reviews]Why "Halloween" 1978 is a classic?

Compared to the contemporary slasher films ( with blood and guts displayed viscerally ) and even compared to John Carpenter's other horror classic The Thing, 1978's film Halloween is rather un-scary in comparison. Yes, it is a slasher, where a lot of teenagers die. Yes it has a lot of disturbing ideas and a lot of rather good cinematic tension. But it is weak in the blood department. Which begs the question: What's so special about this movie?

The 1970s are an interesting time when it comes to cinema history. It is the time after the code was changed into the MPAA rating system ( allowing more violence, nudity and harsh language on the screen ) and yet before new blog-baster Hollywood was born. 1976's Carrie by Brian De Palma was already released after the 1974 Steven Spielberg sensation Jaws. But still before George Lucas broke the planet with his Star Wars. Everybody knew the movies were intense at that time. Some of the most depressing shit came out at the 1970s. And with it, there was also Carrie. A psycho-sexual revenge-tale about child-abuse.

As I observed in my review of Predator 2, the Predator films feel very B-movie-like. And the first film, John McTiernan's 1987 Predator is not an exception.

In my Predator 2 review I observed that the merger of Alien and Predator franchises was not a Paul W. S. Anderson's ( the director of AVP ) fault, since even that movie already had a lot of Alien references in it, including a Xenomorph scull. So it was almost expected by this point that the next movie in the franchise would feature Xenomorphs.

Quentin Tarantino's 2007 film Death Proof is considered the only bad movie written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. For the uninitiated the film seems like a boring film where 90% of the time nothing happens. And for those who know Tarantino it feels like Tarantino is trying too hard to flex his dialogue muscle while forgetting to tell an actual story.

[icon reviews]Together 2025 is yet another Romantic Comedy disguised as a Horror film

I see a trend lately with films like Spontaneous where it seems like the writer / director is trying to do a romantic comedy, but knows it is not going to sell, so the movie is sold as a horror film instead. Michael Shanks's 2025 film Together starring Dave Franco and Alison Brie is another such film.

I enjoyed the movie. The actors were more than good enough, apart from the first scene. The director is phenomenal, especially at this kind of stuff. The image looks good. I dislike the fact that it is Sony. But what the hell. The film overall is kind of amazing.

As pointed out by @Troler in his review of the original Nosferatu since 1922 a lot has changed. 102 years since that movie Robert Eggers delivers a modern take on the same story.

Horror and thrillers seem to be quite ubiquitous in recent times. Nosferatu, a classic from 1920s cinema, has spawned a lot of recreations, making it modern. Yet they fail to see Nosferatu is not horror... at least not in the way the term is usually used.

[icon articles]Is Lars Von Trier Really an Edge Lord?

There is a certain sense among cinephiles that the danish filmmaker Lars Von Trier is nothing but an edge lord, making his films simply as a sort of pornography designed to outrage people. It does not help his case that his films are some of the hardest films to watch. And it doesn't help that his movies tend to touch upon uncomfortable things in very uncomfortable ways. Yet I don't believe Lars Von Trier does any of that for laughs.
